NSW Government proposes expanding land use to aid in farming recovery

NSW Government has put forward several changes that will allow farmers to use their land in innovative ways, such as for agritourism, in the hopes that it will make them more economically resilient in times of natural disasters and other unexpected events.

Planning amendments for agriculture

An Explanation of Intended Effect (EIE) for agritourism and small-scale agriculture development went on exhibition between March and April 2021. A total of 239 submissions were received with majority of the feedback centred around agritourism. The proposed changes are part of a plan to make the farming industry more resilient during economic turmoil.

In the wake of recent natural disasters and COVID-19, the NSW Government is committing to a plan that will see the revival of regional NSW. The planning department has proposed several initiatives that will allow farmers to make the most of their land, namely for tourism activities, like farm stays and cellar doors.

The policy is currently under consideration and councils are working with NSW Government to map out appropriate locations for agritourism within their local government areas. The changes are expected to come into effect in July 2022.

Questions can be directed to the planning department and further information on the proposals and submissions can be found in the documents below:
